Format Research: Website homepage 1

The first thing that draws the audience in when looking at this website homepage is the masthead due to it being the biggest font in the centre of the page. It is also the focal point of the page due to it displaying the artists’ name. In this case it is ‘Ed Sheeran’. I chose to look at Ed Sheeran as his acoustic genre is what I want to do when making my website homepage. Next to this masthead is the artists’ logo which is a paw. I really like the layout of this website homepage and I believe it will inspire me when I am designing my own. Below the masthead are different social network sites that are hyperlinks so when the viewer clicks on them they will take them directly to Ed Sheerans’ twitter, facebook, Youtube channel, MySpace etc. This is a really good way of marketing and is a way the artist is being promoted and links to many different social media’s. The fact that below the embedded video is Ed Sheeran’s latest tweet shows he is trying to keep very up to date with social Medias’.
To the right of the masthead there are different flags asking what country the viewer is from. If you click on a different country, the text is translated in to that language. This shows that this particular artist is famous worldwide and his fan base come from many different countries. Although it seems like a modern website, the fonts seem to be quite retro and old school as they are in a typewriter style. This font is consistent throughout the webpage which I believe makes it look a lot more organised, this is good for a younger target audience as it is easier to read and you are able to find the information needed straight away. Due to it being consistent it seems that the website is almost branded. This aspect is also in the colours, it is a simple mixture of black, white and orange however the bits in orange are more of a focal point and the audience are drawn in to these particular features which also happen to be the promotions.
Looking at this website homepage, Ed Sheeran has promoted a lot of his songs through puff and advertising. To the left of the mast head there is puff which markets merchandise. The white writing explains what it is and the black stands out saying it is ‘available now’, it also has the same paw print, again showing that it is branded. As well as the puff, there is the music video is the centre of the page, due to music videos being a way of marketing singles or albums this demonstrates he is advertising further. The music video in the centre of the page also contributes to the younger target audience. Another aspect that shows it is directed towards a younger age group is the layout. It looks as if it is an updated MySpace account therefore relating towards teenagers.
The last advertisement shown is the picture of Ed Sheerans album.
The image is how the actual album looks however there is a black band attached to it showing where the album is available to buy from. This stands out against the orange album and draws the viewers’ attentions in. Finally there are the links to the far left side of the homepage which are hyperlinks to the different pages. These include the homepage, news, live dates, videos, lyrics, contact and store. Most of these pages also are ways of promoting the artist and wanting their target audience to buy tickets for his concerts or buy his albums. When I design my website homepage I will be taking inspiration from this one as it promotes the artist as well as it being up to date and modern.
